Parque Nacional da Gorongosa
Martin writes... In the distant past (50 years ago), Mozambique boasted one of the best parks in Southern Africa.  Animal numbers ranged from 4,000 hippos, 10,000 buffalo and similar elephants.  Today, after 30 years of civil war, this park has been decimated beyond words.  In a recent survey, only 16 buffalo remain, no hyena and 12 lions (rumoured to be 400 lions before the war).

Proclaimed a conservation area in 1932 it has boomed and gone bust in 70years.  On the positive note, we met the Park Conservation Manager, Dave, who explained how the park was bidding for  a vast sum of American investment (to the tune of $50m) and their subsequent plans to get the park back to its former days.

The project, due to begin next year ... IF the Mozambique government will allow the investment and sign a lease for 30years management.  It is a big project with huge potential of success, so we wish Dave and his team all the best!
