Nigeria - where rumours are unfounded
Very very nervously we approached the Benin / Nigeria border.  With sweaty palms and our brain telling us all about the notorious Nigerians we handed over our passports.  The three police officers each took a turn to ask us a few questions, often repeating the same question.  Once they had all clarified that we were indeed tourists they proceeded to stamp our passports giving us 14 days to enter and exit Nigeria.

An hour later, our passports and carnet stamped we drove onto our first Nigerian road.  Then the checkpoints began!  For the next 40km we endured 30 alternative checkpoints.  Nigerian Police, Immigration, Joint Benin-Nigerian border patrol, Anti-Drugs Squad and a few others all took the opportunity to flag us down and ask us a few harmless questions. Each time we replied that this was our first time in Nigeria. Once they heard this, their expressions changed and we were welcomed with a huge smile.

Our first bushcamp was welcomed with a huge thunderstorm.  With Luca and Sameena sheltering in their truck, we took the opportunity to have a natural shower with the fresh rain water.  Fantastic!

The next morning, whilst packing up a young girl and her mother approached.  They were on their way to the local farm where they worked. Victoria (15 yrs) was shocked to see white people in the flesh. She was in total awe and kept saying "I have not seen a white person before!".  Curiously she touched Debbie's arm, her hair and held on to her as if she was a god. We took a photo of her and printed it out for her to keep.  Victoria had a huge grin on her face!
