Palm-oil plantation
Debbie writes... After a day of hard driving in treacherous muddy conditions, we asked permission to park up for the night at a palm-oil plantation. Owned by British Unilever, the plantation was sold 15 years ago to a private concern when Cameroon introduced high taxes. (Unilever moved to Malaysia.) The workers in the compound were incredibly friendly and hospitable - offering us palm wine, pineapples, eggs ... and great conversation.

Leaving the plantation we headed into the lush jungle towards Idenao (previously owned by Germany). Mt Cameroon (4,098m) stood majestically to the left of us and the sea was ahead of us. Mt Cameroon is an active volcano - the most recent eruption was in 2002 when huge lava rocks flowed down the mountain, destroyed the palm plantations, local villages ... and then abruptly stopped at the tar road leading from Idenao to Limbe.

A delightful surprise that night was some REAL CHAMPAGNE from England! Ben & Chris had not yet toasted the start of their trip (life had been a little hectic), so a good opportunity to pop the cork and share with friends ... :-)

Finally ... toasting the start of their trip

Cheers!!
