A new country...
Our chosen piste out of Mauritania bypassed all exit border posts and also bypassed the official Mauritania / Mali border controls (was this a good idea?!).  We had chosen a very small piste which had hardly been used and as a result we had a fantastic drive through some great scenery and open country.

Our first Mali village was totally deserted, which gave one an eerie feeling - we think that the village was deserted because of the heat and the seasonal grazing the land offers.

Our route through Mali took us close to the city of Kayes and on to an amazing set of waterfalls (see next diary entry).
