Mali kids
Each with a huge grin or a charming smile our first encounter with the Mali kids was a great one. A group of nine young boys timidly approached us as we parked the vehicles next to a set of rapids (along the Senegal river) and next to a hydro-electric power station build by the French in the 1930's. Four of the boys stayed with us well into the evening entertaining us with French and local lingo songs.

The boys, aged from 6 to 13 had the day off from school because the senior kids were writing exams. Shortly after shaking our hands and asking for a stilo (pen), one of the boys was given a bird which had been captured by one of the older ones. This turned out to a be a highlight for the boys and they each took a turn to tease the bird, before the Starling was killed and plucked.

The next meal...

...but only after it's plucked

Debbie writes: At 6am the next morning the boys were waiting outside our tents - looking for their next 'cadeaux' (gift).  At first I felt irritated as I wanted some privacy and space - normal for us westerners, but non-existent for Africans. After trying to drink a cup of tea in front of all the kids (which did not feel comfortable), I finally gave in and pulled out an exact number of pens for each boy. Mayhem ensued and some boys ended up with 2 pens, while others had none...

With temperatures rising (we had been enduring 46Deg C+ since arriving in Mali) we headed off for a swim in the Senegal River with the boys. It was wonderful to watch them enjoy themselves romping in the water! The older boys keeping a watchful eye out for the younger boys - done in a very discreet manner. Martin inflated two spare Land Rover tubes - this provided huge amounts of entertainment for all (the big boys included)!

While sitting on the rocks absorbing the frivolity, a couple of smaller boys starter playing with my hair and braiding it. They were fascinated by the texture and were incredibly gentle with platting my braids.

All aboard!
