Each with a huge grin or a charming smile our first encounter with the Mali kids was a great one. A group of nine young boys timidly approached us as we parked the vehicles next to a set of rapids (along the Senegal river) and next to a hydro-electric power station build by the French in the 1930's. Four of the boys stayed with us well into the evening entertaining us with French and local lingo songs. |

The boys, aged from 6 to 13 had the day off from school because the senior
kids were writing exams. Shortly after shaking our hands and asking for a
stilo (pen), one of the boys was given a bird which had been captured by
one of the older ones. This
turned out to a be a highlight for the boys and they each took a turn to
tease the bird, before the Starling was killed and plucked.
