Cotonou - more visas
Our hastily departure from Ghana so as to cross Togo before the elections closed the borders meant that we did not apply for our Nigerian visa in Accra.  The only other embassy was in Cotonou. See visa page for more information.

Visa Information

Whilst waiting for our Nigerian visas we were asking people where we could spend the night. (We had spent the previous night at a dodgy motel and did not want to repeat the experience!). A logo semi-john (motorbike taxi) suggested a place where whites normally stay - this turned out to be a loval resort called 'Plage Jacob' (Beach Jacob).

Luca was running the truck on diesel fumes as he wanted to cash in on the cheap diesel in Nigeria (36c Euro per litre). Diesel was in very short supply in Benin so the only option was to buy 'black market' diesel from sellers on the road.  The woman in the pictures above easily lifted a 30L container to fill the tank.

The only diesel available

Ismael, the poor farmer from Togo made such an impression on us.  Escaping from Togo for that elusive better life in Benin, he had walked the distance it had taken us to drive.  30 days later we met him on a remote spot close to the Nigerian border.  He immediately dashed off to get us some mangoes.  Energetic and buzzing with humour we instantly took a liking to him.

He walked from Togo!

Ismael, the friendly farmer
